With 11 direct weekly flights from John Wayne Airport to Cabo San Lucas, the adventures on the shores of Baja await. Whether you are planning a romantic vacation, family trip or solo getaway, JWA offers plenty of options to get you there.
JWA is abuzz with activity as the Spring Break travel season begins. In shorts and t-shirts, or sundresses and flip flops, happy vacationers are preparing to board their flight to Cabo San Lucas. Watching their excitement grow I’m curious to know what they are most looking forward to doing or seeing on the beautiful Baja Peninsula.
It seems that most eagerly anticipate a week of sun, beaches and relaxation, while some wanted to enjoy time with friends, and one gentleman was looking forward to a few days fishing. As they leave, I wonder to myself what they know about Cabo’s history and geography that would enrich their travel experience.
I was curious enough to do a little research, and what I learned about Cabo San Lucas might help enrich your vacation.
Cabo Fun Facts
- The rock formation, El Arco, known as the The Arch, is at the southern end of the Baja California Peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean becomes the Gulf of California, and is one of the most picturesque landmarks in North America.
- Baja California is the second longest peninsula in the world and the Gulf of Mexico is one of the most biologically diverse seas on the planet. Travelers request to go to the end of the peninsula, or the Arch, which is also knowns as “Land’s End.”
- The area around The Arch has many other rock formations, including El Vigia (The Watcher), Pelican Rock, Neptune’s Finger, Cerra Blanco, La Lobera (The Rookery) with its sea lion colony, and Pirate’s Cave.
- Cabo was used extensively by pirates and sailors since its discovery in 1537. In fact, English and Dutch privateers (pirates) would hide behind the cover of Land’s End, using El Vigia (The Watcher) to spot sails in the distance and ambush the treasure ships on their way to San Jose del Cabo’s fresh water estuary.
Popular activities in Cabo include sightseeing, whale watching, fishing, snorkeling, diving, hiking, bird watching, zip lining, and enjoying the beautiful beaches, luxurious resorts and delicious local fare.
